Being a student in the Department of English Interpretation and Translation totally changed my understanding of interpretation and translation. Before, like everybody does, I considered interpretation and translation as a piece of cake. In my mind, all the interpreters and translators had to do was simply to exchange vocabularies and shuffle the sentence structures into those of another language. However, I realized how ignorant I was about this field. Different with my thoughts, there were so much steps and skills to learn in this department to produce good interpretation and translation. Also, I started to be charmed by the life as an interpreter. I realized there are so many things to be a good interpreter, but especially, language, background knowledge, and passion seems to be the key quality that interpreter needs to have.

First of all, fluency in languages is one of the most important aspects to become a qualified interpreter. Interpretation is basically the process, which enables the communication between people who speak different languages without any difficulties or awkwardness. Therefore, to provide natural and high-quality interpretation, language is the fundamental ability that interpreter should possess. Fortunately, what I can enjoy and fully commit myself to is learning and being good in language. As a native Korean, I don't feel any difficulty with communicating in Korean, which is considered as one of the hardest languages to learn. Also, I've been interested and learned English for a quite a long time, which helped me to not fear and feel much difficulties in using English.

Second, background knowledge plays very significant role in high-quality interpretation. As a non-expert in specific field, understanding everything in certain field is nearly impossible. However, interpreters should briefly but clearly understand about the field with proper background knowledge. It will provide a better chance for them to make better interpretation. When I was young, I was influenced by my parents who read newspapers every morning. Their habit became my habit and I read newspapers, too. It seemed to be nothing when I was young, but now I know that habit left me a lot of knowledge in various fields. I still have a lot that I don't know about, but I'm sure that I'm going to learn as time goes by.

Last but not least, I value the passion in me the most. People might wonder why, but it's because interpreting requires ceaseless passion in whole career. Language and background knowledge are something very forgettable. It takes us short to forget, but long to recover. To become a better interpreter, we have to endure and put a lot of time and effort to improve, which can't be done without a passion. I think I am very blessed person who is passionate in learning languages and various things. I am sure this passion will bring me a success as an interpreter someday.

In conclusion, a successful interpreter needs to be fluent in languages, have broad range of knowledge, and good passion within them. Luckily, I have those powers in me to become a competent interpreter. In the future, I would like to work hard on my studies and achieve my dream.

Future Careers

Unlike past when people stay in the first job until retirement, people nowadays change their jobs frequently. According to a survey, employees aged below 40 will highly likely to change their job at least three times on average in their lifetime. This implies that there is a strong need for me to contemplate on future jobs I will be working at as well as abilities required for each job. Considering these, it narrowed down into three occupations: a diplomat, a translator, and a professor.

A job I would like to consider first and foremost is a diplomat. To become a diplomat, proficient language ability and outstanding interpersonal skill are required. Since a diplomat generally stays in other country on behalf of the government, English and the language of the country he/she is in charge is a necessity. Further, interpersonal skill is crucial because building and maintaining a good relationship between the officials of the country in charge may culminate in enhancing a relationship between the two countries. Thus, equipping with these skills should be a priority when becoming a diplomat.

When I finish my career as a diplomat, I would like to become a translator. Translator here refers to a person who renders messages from one language into another language in written text. As well as language ability, the most important skill needed for a translator is attention to detail. Unlike interpreting which is mostly done verbally, translating is dealt with written form of text. Therefore, it is critical not to overlook key words or phrases and render them appropriately. The second important factor for a translator is responsibility. Meeting deadline by managing the time properly is significant when it comes to developing trust between clients. These skills must be pondered on becoming a translator.

Afterwards, I would like to be teaching as a professor. Being a professor asks not only wide latitude of academic knowledge I engage in but also a various range of academic fields. To keep motivated by curiosity about academic issues will contribute to conveying knowledge and thoughts to the students. In addition to it, excellent communication skills, verbal skills in particular, are essential. Giving a lecture is mostly held in verbal form of communication and how explicit and clear a professor can relay the message mainly affects the understanding of students. Thus, those skills influence huge impact on qualification of a professor.

To put a nutshell, I am highly interested in pursuing my career as a diplomat, a translator, and a professor. It is no more valid statement of having a so-called 'iron rice bowl' job nowadays. People will be in need of searching another job to extend their career a few times at least. In a sense, it will be worth to meditate deeply on your future careers in the near future.

Ahn sang-wook/classfication essay/tue 9 am.

"What factors are necessary to become a…" this is a common question when we gather information about jobs we want to have. As old saying says, lf you know your enemy and yourself, you can win every battle. In my case, I want to be a high school teacher. Then, what abilities are important as teacher and what abilities I possess to become a teacher?

First one is a great ability at teaching. I think I'm quite good at teaching. Teaching itself is one of the most important factors for becoming a high school teacher. In these days, however, incompetence of teachers' instruction stirs up social controversy. It is about their incapability does not fulfill the needs of students and they are increasingly searching for private tutors. Against this background, my great ability at teaching is essential. To prove this, let me present the example: when I taught a high school student, his English grades was up 30 points compared to the past. It was amazing moment to see his soaring grades from 50 points to 80 point from 100 points. He expressed his sincere gratitude for me. His success was attributed to me.

Second one is my diverse experiences. Roles of teachers are not limited in the scope of studying. Teachers also offer personality education which is hard to be performed only by students' parents, and they are also necessary to tell about the real society or the way people are living outside the textbooks. I think diverse experiences of real life are required to achieve these. When it comes to diverse experiences of mine, I put forth the experience of workers in a manufactory. That was first time that I was out of the textbook after finishing college entrance exam. I learned a lot of things from the manufactory: The relationships between supervisor and worker and the real hardship of making electronic equipment. Moreover, I had train travel two weeks without plans and I went to mountain for hang glide without helping from others.

Last one is responsibility. It is a basic requirement of all occupations. It is especially important for teachers because they are guiding students who are growing up and will take responsibility of the future of our nation. Therefore, the number of teachers who are responsible of their students should be increased. They have to exert themselves to teach them in more effective, creative, and complete ways. In my case, when I was private tutor, I never changed the time we were supposed to meet except for when a student wanted to change the time because of his personal issues.

To sum up, a great ability at teaching, diverse experiences, and responsibility are the most important factors to become a teacher and I have those things which are proved through the examples. Maybe other things are necessary to become a teacher and I'm not qualified enough to be a teacher. But the important thing is this: just go forward to make my dream come true.

Yujin Park / Classification Essay / Tue 9 am

Do you have a dream? We can dream and imagine our future with whatever we treasure most. Because we are still young.

Ban ki Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, said "Study like an idiot and Dream like a genius." He tells about how in the world the people who endeavor to do well have more success in life than geniuses and whoever really enjoys studying has more success than everyone else.
I was very impressed by his saying and It helps me to dream more and more even in the difficulties and It was a kind of catalyst for rebounding from a setback. Most of all, It makes me study and make a career to fulfuill my goal which is to work in the UN. I'm interested in international relations and also in the world education. So, I hope to work in the UNICEF in the future in order to contribute to develop the conditions of schooling and the quality of Education in Africa.
So, I'd like to explain you what kind of abilities are needed to work in the Unicef and what ablities I have for my potential career.

First, Unicef is leading global efforts to support effective and life-saving actions in child's life and
it also contributes to give all children the opportunities to receive a quality education.
So, the knowledge of education and of child walfare and the strong interest in child walfare work are needed.
In my case, with my interest in education, I'm in a course of teaching of French and English.
When I take courses of education, I take a deep interest in studying in this field. Therefore, Taking courses of education gives me not only the knowledge of education and schooling but also the broaden eye for having perspective of education. So, for futher understanding and to be professional, I'd like to study more about child walfare and education in Master's course.

Second, especially, in order to work in the Unicef, the spirit of dedication and commitment to the world is really essential. Because working in Unicef means we should be a person who contribute and commit for other people not for us.
Since 2009, I've worked as a volunteer of teaching English in child care center. When I worked as a first time, I didn't have much interest in teaching and even Unicef compared to now. However, I've changed my mind. So, my experience as a volunteer teacher made me decide to work in the Unicef.
Through this experience, I realized that how working for others, especially for children, is important.
Because even if I work in the Unicef, without having a responsibility for children's life and for committing to the world's education, I can easily give it up.

Third, Speaking and writing in UN official language fluently is one of the essential ability.
Without this ability, all abilities I mentioned above become useless. So, in order to work with other employees and children around the world, speaking and writing ability is essentially required.
Based on English fluency, one other language is required. I think my french speaking and writing ability will be helpful. However, language ability is the most important and the most difficult for me. Therefore, I should develop my language skills more and more by making this first priority.

The most important ability is to trust ourselves and to move forward slowly. Although my ability is still small things and it seems that it will be hard to work in company in which I've dreamed to work, even though It would be difficult thing right now, someday my dream will come true.
I wish that this fantastic day is going to come to you and me and all of us!

Interpreting is easy, right? All that is needed is, interpret words from one language to another. Especially if you are born into a family with two ethnic backgrounds, this should be a piece of cake. Many people have this wrong perception, thinking as long as one is able to interpret words from a source language  (mother tongue) to a target language (second language) that makes him an interpreter. Wrong. There is more to interpreting than we think. For any interpreters-to-be, one needs to have good fluency in languages they are dealing with, have broad knowledge in all kinds of field and also, have self-awareness.

It is vital to have good fluency in languages that one is dealing with and this may require years of practice. The quality of interpretation depends greatly on how an interpreter is able to use different styles of speaking, understanding the essence of a language when an idiom or expression is used and also the awareness of using the diverse register in both source and target languages. When an interpreter is able to grasps all the qualities above, this will make an interpretation more effective and also able to render speeches reasonably well.

Second to that, to develop excellent interpretation proficiency, it is important that an interpreter has to be attentive to different knowledge for various fields. Fields such as business, science or religion, as long as it deals with speeches, interpretation is on high demand especially in international conferences where people from different countries gather. Having exposed to these various of fields will help interpreters to have a rough idea of what contents of speeches they will be dealing with, as well as preparing beforehand specific vocabularies needed during the interpretation.

Last but not least, it is also significant that an interpreter needs to have self-awareness. According to Dorte Andres, a professor in Translation Studies, she mentioned that, "Every time I acted as interpreter, there was a bit of me in there. I am aware of my own subjectivity, but I can't separate myself from it." It is crucial for any interpreters to be aware to not betray the original text by changing to one's own interpretation when conveyed to the listeners. Through this, interpreters will be able to convey speeches as original as possible.

One should know that, talented interpreters are not made overnight. This requires a lot of investment in time, patience and also hard work dealing with both the source and target language. Switching from one language to another is a very demanding task. Constantly improving on the fluency of languages, reading different texts for broader understanding and reminding oneself about self-awareness are factors that contribute greatly into making one a good interpreter.

JiWon KIm/timed writing/Tue 9 am

A recent YouTube video has been an issue. A Korean-American adoptee, a rapper, uploaded a video and rapped about his longing for birth mother. In the video, he hopes to find her and doesn't blame her on abandonment. Many people that watched it shed tears and posted his video on their SNS to help him look for his real mother. As in this case, many adoptees want to meet their birth family and know about their homeland and roots. So, I think, it is really important for them to find out the identity of their birth parents.

If children realize that they don't resemble their parents in appearance at all, they are very confused and it is difficult to accept or understand this feeling, Even they may grow up feeling anxious, depressed, emotionally detached and socially isolated. If it keeps, they may become rebellious children who get into trouble and go away from the right path. So, adopted parents should tell them that they were adopted and help them to search for identity.

Next, if these adoptees find their souls, they will have a broad view about the world. They will try to learn a mother tongue and culture or visit to their mother country. After grown up, they may play important role in exchanging two cultures. And also they are proud to share two heritages. I think this open-minded attitude is necessary because we are now living in a multi-cultural society.

Finally, finding birth parents is their rights. One of the biggest questions the adoptees have is who give birth to them. And they also want to know the reason for abandonment and how their actual parents live now. so they need to find answers to their questions and have the time to understand their actual parents and share feelings each other. After this process, they can make their lives seem richer.

In these days, many adoptees try to search for real parents through SNS, like facebook, and someone found the twin sister of her on YouTube. Finding birth parents becomes easier thanks to the development of technology. However it is only the effort of personal level. So many organizations to help them are needed and we show continued attention for adoptees.
