Ju Hye Choi / Argumentative Essay / Tues 9AM

Many are aware that illegally downloading and sharing music off the internet is a crime. Yet people continue this violation because it is far more convenient and economizing than to go to the stores to purchase an expensive CD album or to buy it from the internet. Moreover, most people can get away with illegal downloading therefore many do not realize how serious of a crime they are committing. It may be the reason people are open about telling others about illegally downloading music off the internet and not feel guilty about it despite the fact that it is still an ongoing issue. However, this crime is inevitably ruining the music industry and artists themselves.

Many artists spend a great deal of time producing their music. The time they spend writing lyrics to their songs, working together with other musicians to record the soundtracks, creating an album cover takes up a lot of time. Not only that, artists must save time to go through a process of filling out a songwriter publisher share letter of agreement which is a document that all writers and publishers must sign to keep their records. All this is time consuming yet artists have to go through this because it is the only way they can release their music officially. When people illegally download music off the internet they steal the time from them that was spent making and releasing their music.

Furthermore, many artists put a lot of effort in making and releasing their music. The effort that artists put into hiring musicians (background singers, instrumentalists), editing all the songs, working together with featuring artists and going through many processes of filling out forms is not as easy said than done. Yet people still continue illegally downloading music off the internet because artists nevertheless come out with new releases. However although it may seem that illegally downloading music off the internet does not affect musicians, it discourages many artists in putting effort in releasing other albums.

Finally, the amount of money that is spent in making and releasing music is tremendous. Not only do artists spend a lot of money in making their album covers and the album itself but also by hiring musicians and promoting their music. All the ads, commercials and posters people see all costs artists money yet people who do illegal downloading do not really think about it, instead think about how much it costs them to purchase album covers.

In short, this crime of illegally downloading music off the internet is not only unjust for artists but is also a crime against humanity. If people continue to download music illegally, it will not only continue to discourage musicians from making music but also continue to ruin the music industry. Brad Paisley, an American singer –songwriter has once said, "My producer, my co-writers, my musicians have a big part in my albums. When you download music illegally, those folks don't get paid." If we want to live in a just world, whether it may seem impossible, something must be done to prevent this crime from continuing.

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is it made strong argument about why illegal downloading is wrong.

    2. Your main point seems to be illegal downloading is a serious crime and we should be aware of it.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:'a crime against humanity' but I think it is rather too strong.

    4. Some things aren’t clear to me.
' It may be the reason people are open about telling others about illegally downloading music off the internet and not feel guilty about it despite the fact that it is still an ongoing issue.' I think this sentence is too long.

    5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is by making some sentence structure more simpler.

    1. Does the essay have five paragraphs? Yes.

    2. Does the essay have a thesis statement that identifies the writer's point of view? Yes. This crime(illegal downloading) is inevitably ruining the music industry and artists themselves.

    3. Do the body paragraphs include topic sentences that support the writer's position? Yes.
The every topic sentence of the body paragraphs is the first sentence of the paragraph.

    4. Does the third body paragraph contain a counter-argument with either a refutation or a concession? I don't think so. (If it comes under any of those three, I'd like to know.)

    5. Do the details in the body paragraphs support reasons stated in the topic sentences? Definitely yes.

    6. Does the conclusion restate the thesis statement in a different words, make a prediction, or state the issue in a broader context? Yes.

    7. What I like about this piece of writing is the conclusion part that summarizes all the main points that had been discussed. The quotation befits the argument, and it is impressive and refreshing.

  3. Many are aware that illegally downloading and sharing music off the internet is a crime. Yet people continue this violation because it is far more convenient and economical. Also, most people can get away with illegal downloading; therefore, many do not realize how serious it is. However, this crime is in no doubt ruining the music industry and even artists themselves.

Not only that, artists must save time to go through a process of filling out a songwriter publisher share letter of agreement (a document that must be signed in order to keep records.) All these are time consuming yet people continuously download music off the internet illegally which is stealing time.
Furthermore, it is not as easy said than done for musicians to release an album. Artists have to hire musicians (background singers, instrumentalists), edit all the songs, work together with featuring artists and go through many processes of filling out forms which are all very wearing. Yet people still continue illegally downloading music off the internet because artists nevertheless come out with new releases. However although it may seem that this crime is not deeply affecting musicians, it discourages many artists in releasing new albums.
In short, this crime of illegally downloading music off the internet is unfair. If people continue to download music illegally, it will not only continue to discourage musicians from making music but also continue to ruin the music industry. Brad Paisley, an American singer –songwriter has once said, "My producer, my co-writers, my musicians have a big part in my albums. When you download music illegally, those folks don't get paid."
