Ju Hye Choi / Timed Writing / Tues 9AM

Due to the development of technology, the world has become more work-centered. People today find jobs more easily and get work done much faster that people take the advantage of time saving devices such as email, computer and smart phones to be more productive. However, this change in society has reversely made it harder for people to experience leisure time leading to more stress and negativity.

According to research, leisure time helps prevent stress related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and abnormal blood pressure. The reason is that when you relax, it slows down your heart rate and allows the increasing blood flow to your muscles. It consequently helps people keep a positive mind. However, many people today do not take this problem seriously.

Leisure time also helps people refresh their minds. It allows people to relax giving them the opportunity to evaluate their own lives to see whether or not they are accomplishing the things that are important to them. Yet people are often are too tied up at work and constrained by time that they forget the importance of leisure time.

Some people, especially workaholics, may sense more joy and satisfaction by getting things done or by being busy. A common trait that we see in this type of personalities is that, despite they are given free time, their mind is still thinking about work. Therefore, if they are not working they feel like they are being unproductive. However, leisure time does not mean being unproductive. Rather, in this case, it means you are making time for yourself to relax so that you can be more productive.

Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher has once said, 'the present letter is a very long one, simply because I had no leisure to make it shorter.' When we value leisure time, we value ourselves and time. It helps us learn and think of the things that are important to us and that cannot be experienced when we are being tied up at work. In other words, it helps us think broader and more positively allowing us to take all the unnecessary things in our lives out that may be taking up a lot of our time. If we truly want to be productive, we must work. But if we truly want to be more productive, leisure time is the gift.
