 our vital work, respiration

Have you ever played a game that who can endure longer without breathing?

Breathing is very important. Why? Imagine you can't breathe. What happens?

You will die in a few minutes because you can't obtain the energy through the respiration.

Actually respiration is very important for human including animals or anything alive.

So I am going to deal with how the respiration system works.

There are two kinds of respiration : external respiration and internal respiration. When we are breathing, we inhale and exhale air.

As the air enters the lungs, O2 and CO2 gas exchange takes place and it is called external respiration.

The blood that contains a lot of O2 will go into the tissues. Gas exchange occurring between blood and tissue fluid is called internal respiration.

The incoming oxygen in cells will be used to produce energy and the process is called cell respiration.

It is how the respiration works. You can see many necessary workings take place through the respiration.

Dayoung Park/volcano eruption/Tue 9am

There are many things human cannot deal with, and most of them are natural disasters. Of all, volcano eruption cannot be predicted easily than any other disasters because it takes very long time for a volcano to erupt. And there should be several steps to erupt a volcano.

First, there should be vapor steam around volcano. It has different pressure from original atmosphere there, so it makes vibration in the air. And it causes rocks to fall downside.

Second, seething puddle is found out. the vapor steam goes near the outer layer, and it can make the puddle boiling up. As the puddle seethes, the land gets swinging. And as times goes by, its vibration will be stronger.

Last, a crater is observed that it makes smoke. The movement of land lasts to the top of the volcano. Over there, eventually, the smoke appears. And then, magma is erupted as a shape of lava.

So, the volcano eruption can be told that it has four stages. Volcano has vapor steam, seething puddle should be found, and a crater also should be observed. All these stages can be seen for so long time. So we always shouldn't forget about the danger of volcano eruption. It may be progress near the place you live in now.

I'm sorry. I had some mistyping, This is my new one.

What makes a volcano erupt?
Whenever People think about Volcanoes, they describe it as huge natural disaster. The eruption of Volcano has much deadly impact than we imagine. Sometimes, it can create new island. furthermore, An island can be disappered because of it.
Also, it makes the highest mountain in Korean Peninsula, Beakdu mountain. On the other hand, the ancient city was totally destroyed and thousands were killed since volcano erupted.
Then what makes such fearful volcano erupt? What the main reason of this frightened or omnificent volcano's eruption?

The widely known reason is the unnaturaly high pressures in the Earth. The heat and pressure in mantle makes rocks melt and it forms magma. So magma in Earth encounters high Density materials Until it reaches to The surface of Earth. Therefore, volcanic eruption occurs. There are two forms of eruption, one is lava flow and the other is explosion.

Also, the eruption can be explained by the Released gasses. The magma contains dissolved components like water and carbon dioxide.
Magma decreased its pressure and it rises up towards the crust. so the gasses are released.
Therefore, it rises up to tectonic plate. The pressure of released gases is the Second reason of volcanic eruption.

The volcanic eruption is caused by the injection of new magma. I read about it in the book, the researcher said when th new magma enters, the pressure is increased so it makes magma more active. That could be another reason of volcanic eruption.

Whenever we have problem, we try to figure out what the reasons are. In case of volcanic eruption, Although we have exact geological reason, We hardly prevent this terrible natural disaster. What is the most effective solution to prevent it? We should try to find out what's the main solution to prevent this. I know it's not possible now However for the next generation, we MUST prevent catastrophes like Pompeii.

How does the human respiratory system work?

Respiration is the process that introduces respiratory gases to the interior and performs gas exchange.

As human breaths, air comes in noses and go through bronchial tubes and finally get to the lung.

Then molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide are passively exchanged by diffusion between the gaseous external environment and the blood.

When we introduce air, the ribs goes up and diaphram goes down so that there's room for air.

When we exhale, the procedure is reversed so that the air can go out.

In conclusion, respiration is the process of air inhale and exhale by lung's contraction and relaxation.

Joung Hwan Park / Taking part in a play / Tues 9am

How good would you have to be if you wanted to perform in Broadway? You would first need to be good at performing, which is obvious I know. You would also need to be quite famous, and good-looking, too. Performing in Broadway, or in any other place for that matter, deals with the common aspect of taking part in a musical or a play. Now, other than the things mentioned above, let's think about the more practical aspects in terms of taking part in a play.

Plays are full of words and dialogues. That means one has to learn the script off by heart in order to perform in a play. Memorizing the script is probably the most basic aspect that must be taken into consideration when preparing for a play. Just imagine how embarrassing it would be if a person who was acting forgot their lines in front of a bunch of people, and the effect it will have on the whole performance. Thus, I would say that, when taking part in a play, memorizing the script would be first priority as learning the notes would be considered as of equal importance when, for example, performing music.

Plays have characters. Each person who takes part in a play has a designated character that they must perform as. Not all characters are the same, so there is a need for the actor or actress to analyze and be very familiar with their characters. If not, then the personality and emotion of that character would not be conveyed enough to in fulfilling its role within the play. Some people might think that the audience will not be able to notice something that minor, but actually they do. Hence, the audience's verdict in deciding whether a particular play was good or not heavily depends, not just on how perfectly a performer performs their lines, but also on how well the actual feel of the characters are conveyed, which maximizes the effect the audience gets from that play.

Plays require practice. I mean a lot of practice. Plays are not something where someone memorizes their lines, analyzes their character and forget about it until the day before the actual performance. Hence, a performance is not something that someone could just magically do even though they know everything in their heads. One must practice by saying the lines out loud, acting out specific scenes and top it off by adding emotion to all of them. Nobody is good at something from the beginning, so what I would like to recommend to people wanting to take part in a play is practice, practice and practice.

Everyone knows that performing in Broadway, or in any other place for that matter, is not easy. Just performing, on its own, is not easy. What was mentioned above are just some of the basic guidelines that are necessary for taking part in a play, but I believe the one thing that completes a person in becoming a good actor or actress is passion. Thus, I would recommend, know the theories and strive with passion.

Human Respiration

Jong Beom Cho

What are some things that we cannot live without? There would be many answers: food, water, money, or perhaps even emotional values like love. However, there is one aspect of our lives that we all take for granted. It is respiration, which can be visually observed by the up and down movement of human chests and we cannot literally live without it. Although respiration itself may seem as a simple activity of inhaling and exhaling, the entire process of respiration is much more complicated and fascinating. In order to understand human respiration, we first must understand the purpose of respiration and then the two main types of respiration: external and internal respiration.

Understanding why respiration takes place is crucial to understanding its process. When people hold their breath for a long time, they usually say that they need more air. From this we can assume that the purpose of respiration is to gain oxygen from the air. However, the main purpose of respiration is not to gain oxygen but to remove carbon dioxide within our body. From this gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, human body produces energy required to sustain its life. Therefore, the purpose of respiration is to remove carbon dioxide from our body and consequently manufacturing energy that is necessary for sustaining life.

After understanding the goal of respiration, the bigger part of the respiration process, external respiration, can be understood. As mentioned earlier in the text, the goal of the respiration was to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide inside our body. In order to do so, humans have specialized organ that does the job which is called lung. Human lung have numerous number of gas exchanging device called lung sacs. Lung sacs are distributed throughout the inner surface of the lung. When human inhale, the air is sucked into the lung and lung sacs exchange the inhaled oxygen in the air with the carbon dioxide emitted from our body which is then exhaled out of the lung. This process is easily observed by the up and down movement of our chest. This was the respiration in the big picture, exchange of gas. However, in a smaller level there is more complexity to respiration.

There was another purpose of respiration other than the gas exchange, supplying our body with energy. This process which is called, internal respiration takes action in much more microscopic level. Internal respiration is a process which cells use oxygen as a main energy source and emit carbon dioxide and water, therefore, this process is also called cellular respiration. Humans like most living organisms, gain energy in forms of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) from decomposing carbohydrate, protein, and fat through internal respiration. The energy producing process is conducted in following order: glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and electric transport system. Through these three chemical processes which happen at the different level of human body, total 32 ATP are created from one glucose molecule, ready to fuel our body. Had our body gain its fuel from external respiration, internal respiration is a process which then burns the fuel and producing energy that sustain human body.

Respiration takes action without knowing. Therefore, we are often unaware of how it functions and the purpose of the respiration. But respiration is the foundation of all our biochemical activity happening in the body. Respiration fuels us and also feed us at the same time. Although it happens in such a small scale making us hard to notice, it is still a fascinating process.

One day when I visited and pay my respects at my respects at great-grand parents, I happened to see a fire on the other side of the mountain. That was my first time I've ever seen a fire actually happened and I was almost about to cry, terrified by the threatening scene. When I hear of volcanic eruption, I can't even imagine how tremendous it would be. By watching it on the news doesn't make me get the feel of it a bit. Below is the process of the volcanic eruption from the magma created in the ground and eruption to the surface through cracks of the ground.

First, eruption of magma is due to the gas inside the magma in the ground. Magma is in a liquid state created deep in the ground like a jelly but it contains gas and other substances. Second, volatile substances in the magma become volcanic gas and the rest creates a volcano made of lava flowing in the ground and pyroclastic debris.

Afterwards, when magma is formed, magma rises gradually by getting low density than nearby rocks. Next, rising magma is pressured by surrounding rocks. However, when Magma ascends, pressure of the magma decreases and pressure of the gas run in the magma gets low, soaring upwards just like opening a shaken cola.

After that, these bubbles put pressure on the surface of the ground which is covering the magma. Finally when the surface can't bear that power, magma comes out through weak parts of the ground. At times, volcano is created by lava flowing on the surface slowly. At another time, it is created by grand explosion, pyroclastic flow coming out to the ground.

It is such a rare occurrence that one can see a volcanic eruption in one's life. Even though it is significant hard to experience, people should be aware of the concept of the volcanic eruption and its benefits and dangerousness as well.

How laws are made in Korea

Our social life cannot be taken away from the Korean Constitution. Almost every decision and behavior we made is affected by laws. Some Korean might think that the process of making a law is so complicated that normal citizen would have a hard time to understand. However, the process can be regarded as being composed of three major and simple steps.

After a new law is proposed, a standing committee is held. The property of the law determine which ministry holds the standing committee. For example, when the law is related with the environment, the Ministry of Environment holds the committee. During the committee, the members examine the purpose and the general content of the law. And then, members vote on whether the law should be passed or not to the next stage.

If the proposed law is pass in the standing committee, it is then dealt with by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. In this committee, members check whether the law is against the constitution and if legal terms of the law is appropriate and correct. After than, members decide whether it should be passed to a regular session.

The regular session, which is the final stage for the proposed law, finally vote on the passage of the law. As a condition for the regular session, the majority of all the incumbent lawmakers in Korea should participate in the process. More than a third of votes are needed to pass the law. If the proposed law is passed, it is time for the government to announce the new law.

Actually, it takes another six months until the law goes into effect. Anyway, we now apprehend the major process of the legislation in Korea, and it seems not too difficult to understand. Understanding the process of legislation, we are able to figure out what it is like to make a law and better assert our own rights.

The aroma of coffee filling in the air, we easily smell it these days. But have you ever run a café? I had wished to run a café since I graduated from high school, and I had the opportunity to do this. My club decided to run a café for a day and donate the whole profit to help the poor. We rented a café and then started to prepare. We spent a lot of time and effort planning and preparing for the project.

To start with, we formed the whole plan three weeks before the event. First, we decided to sell a few kinds of beverages and desserts. Then, we divided the work; one team was to make all kinds of coffee, another team was assigned to make other beverages, and the other team was supposed to cook desserts. After that, we agreed that it would be better to decorate the café altogether. Finally, all members went to the market to buy necessary materials.

My team was in charge of beverages and we started with lemonade because it took a few days to make it. First of all, we rubbed lemons with rock salt and rinsed them under running water. Next, we soaked them in water mixed with baking soda and vinegar for 10-15 minutes. After his, we cut lemons into thin slices and removed seeds. Then, we mixed sliced lemons with sugar and put them into a bottle, and all we had to do was to wait for two or three days. Finally, we mixed this lemon syrup with soda. Though it was the first time we made lemonade, it was delicious and we were very proud.

The all members decorated the café the day before the event. First, we mopped the floor and wiped tables. Next, we spread a tablecloth and then placed napkins, a small lamp and a menu on each table. After that, we put up some posters informing the meaning of the event on the wall and placed a few brochures about the club at the entrance. Finally, the café was ready to welcome people and it made us more excited.

Even though it took a long time to prepare for the event, all the members had fun while planning the project. Also, a lot of people came and enjoyed with us, and the donation was successful as well. It was a great experience to run a real café on my own and help others at the same time.

The Korean festival of Daeboreum is the day of the first full moon of the lunar year.

People gather together and pray for the health and richness, watching the full moon.

During the holiday, people play several games and dance with hand in hand.

And having various kind of herbs and peanuts, families hope their health.

Nowadays people are too busy to gather togather so the festival is losing its importance. It's sad that this valuable cultural thing is becoming harder to observe with the times.

We all had been a baby once. If you were in Korea when your childhood is in Korea, you probably had Dol Zan Chi, the celebrity for baby having birth in 100 days. It is very happy day for both parents and babies, but in order to be more happy you have to do things in a right progress.

First, you have to prepare things for the Dol Zan Chi. You have to book place for the party and send out invitations to your grandparents, relatives and friends. If you are invited, you have to prepare some gifts. There are many kinds of gifts but money is the most popular.

After the preparation, now the process of the Dol Zan Chi begins. First start with opening speech by parents and oldest people in the party. It is mostly about just opening so it could not be serious. Just say like thanks for coming and have a good day today.. Than in the traditional Dol Zan Chi, a grandfather bow a arrow with a baby, put sorghum and adzuki cake at the end of the arrow. Cake's red color means defeating the calamity, so having a good life for the baby's life.

Then one of the important time for Dol Jan Chi, the picking time. Put the string, money and pencil in front of the baby's table. Next, wait for baby to choose one of the things. Each of the things have it's own meaning. String means for the long life, Money means for property and the pencil stands for the high academic ability. Most of the parents want pencil in Korea, because the Korea is education-important society.

So These are the three processes for the Dol Zan Chi. There are bit difference from traditional and morderen Dol Zan Chi that moderns are more simplified. But whether modernized or traditional, I talked about both standard Dol Zan Chi. Because most of the Korean babies had done this before, It is better for us to know how to do this.

Kayeong Kim / Process Essay / Tues 9 a.m.

The ‘TGV’ as known for student play club of French department in HUFS was closed because they failed recruit new members. It might have several reasons, but I guess the main reason was there’s no one who want be an actor in a regular performance. It makes us feel embarrassed when we are in front of others, especially playing an act since we think it as unnatural. Everyone wants to be a heroine once in a life, but few people could achieve it. The stage was too scary for me at that time. If I could get some position in the play or concert, I wouldn’t hesitate anymore. To get an awesome opportunity for that, I am writing 3 steps when I will follow to be a real heroine of the performance.

First, when I am selected as a actor in a play, I will search through the internet whether there are performance, movie or opera related to that story. Since most of the students’ plays tend to follow popular works in Korea or the origin country, I am sure there will be at least one performance which is ongoing at that time. It would help me understand the main stream of the story and their great performance will motivate me to being a better person like them. If there’s no ongoing performance, I will search Youtube channel to watch a video. And then, for excellence understanding of the piece, I will read a book at any cost. While reading a book, I could imagine scenery by myself and create special part which could be my unique point during the work.

Second, I will have much time to become intimate with colleagues. In my perspective, teamwork is the most important thing to do something together. And to get a great teamwork, I need to know the person individually. Eating delicious food, going to shopping and talking with them would enhance me to understand people in person. Or I could do the things I mentioned before – it might be getting two birds with one stone! In my opinion, building concrete relationship is essential to achieve a work together. It would take much time than doing alone, but there’s ancient Indian saying, ‘If you want to go faster, go alone. If you want to go further, go together.’

Lastly, it is up to me with two previous things combined together. I know it very well that practice makes perfect. However, in most cases, it’s easier said than done. That’s why I write this thing here not to forget my willingness later. When Steve Jobs delivered introduction session of Apple’s new devices, he said he practiced more than dozens of times. He even checked his moving line, the lights and gesture. He wasn’t talented person to deliver presentations – maybe he was a little bit better than me, but the important thing is to prepare till you satisfied your performance. Moreover, during the practice, I would feel I become a person in a script. I will eat as she is described in a script, I will perform as she is alive in a real life. I will absorb every characteristic that she has in a script through tireless practice.

Those 3 steps are very useful tips in acting a play. While writing those three steps, I realized how preparation is important in everything we face. While preparation, I will start with small or easy things that I can deal with fast. And then I withstand long journey to a real stage. If there’s one change for me to perform a play, I am sure I will choose to take it, and enjoy it. Even after graduation, I heard there are some clubs for workers and still I have an opportunity! I added one more in my bucket list.

Jieun Choi/Process analysis Essay/Tues 9:00 am

My friend always mesmerized me when she was on the stage. Her superb performance deserved a spotlight considering so much effort she put on a single performance. Being a member of a theatre club for two years, I've always seen her working hard on her character to perform well in the play. Few months advance from the performance, she began to prepare to "be" the character. To become the character, she followed these steps: she read the script for several times, analyzed the character, and finally brought the character into life.

First of all, what she did is to read the script repeatedly and thoroughly until she understood the whole structure of a story. She tried to understand not only the story but also the relationship between each character in the scenario. Understanding these was considered as a key of this process because no character could stand alone without a story and a relationship with other characters. She read again and again if she couldn't understand some parts of the script. At the same time, she made brief notes about her role; for example, she wrote down the role's rough image in her head and characteristics that could be inferred while reading down the script.

After getting the gist of a script, she started to analyze the character. Based on the notes she wrote while reading the script, she began to make some specific details of the character's characteristic. To illustrate, once there was a character named Jolene. Jolene was a very rough character which males in the play feared of. However, in this step, she put some other characteristics, such as Jolene being a shy girl when it comes to love, to make the character much more attractive.  In addition, she organized the emotion the character might have felt in certain situations to feel much easier to act.

Finally, she brought the character into reality by deciding the appearance, tone of the voice and adding the details to her character. When deciding the appearance, there are many things to consider about with a lot of conversation with staffs and other actors to follow the entire concept of the play. When she was playing an Otaku as her role, she had to think about the hairstyle, clothes to wear and a makeup. After few days of thinking, she decided to tie her hair loose as if she didn't wash her hair for few days. Then, she decided to wear a big T-Shirt with stretched neck. She also decided to put no makeup except on her eyes. Not only her appearance, but she also decided what kind of voice and tone she's going to say. Then, she added some details with the character's motion to reveal the characteristic of her role.

Being on the stage requires a lot of effort. They have to spend few months to read and understand the script, analyze character and bring the character into the reality. I can definitely say the process is very challenging, which requires a lot of time and thoughts. However, being under the spotlight and getting the ovations of audiences makes them to forget those hard times and feel the great achievement.

Volcano Eruption

Have you heard of an island called 'Atlantis'? According to some researchers, this wealthy and powerful island had boasted its glorious civilization thousands years ago but disappeared overnight due to the volcano eruption and earthquakes. Volcano eruption is caused due to the diastrophism and usually accompanied by earthquakes. Then, what makes a volcano erupt? The procedure of volcano eruption can be divided into three parts.

To begin with, according to Plate Tectonics, plates(or mantles) compose the continents of the earth. These plates continuously move and end up being crashed against each other. Then, the heat caused by the friction forms magma, molten liquid that is beneath the crust of the earth.

Next, when magma is formed, it contains both liquid and gas. When they're blended together, they tend to rise. As soon as the magma seeks out weak spot of the surface, it starts erupting out.

Finally, the magma flows out on the surface of the earth. When it erupts out to the top, it's called 'lava'. This is called 'volcano eruption' and it is often followed by earthquakes. When volcano erupts, it usually involves not only lava and earthquakes but also steam, ash, hot groundwater, and igneous stones.

Volcano eruption does include many procedures to eruption. It is the result of unceasing movement of internal part of the earth. As the case of Atlantis, natural disaster such as volcano eruption cannot be prevented. However, if we fully understand the steps how volcano erupts, we may be able to consider possible ways to deal with it from taking many people's lives.

Hyein Shim/ Process essay/ tue 9am

Recently, I heard the news about Baekdu Mountain. It was about the possibility of Baekdu's volcanic eruption and that was 99% in twenty years. I was so shocked that I can be a victim of the eruption because the mountain Baekdu is located in North Korea, and I live in South Korea. I thought I have to prepare about eruption but unfortunately, I had nothing to do with right now. So I just wanted to study about the process of volcanic eruption. The process of volcanic eruption is very complicated and has differences in various conditions, but the essence is simple. It is all about "magma."

First, magma is created. The earth has high temperature and pressure when goes deeper and deeper to ground. With these high temperature and pressure, the rock cannot maintain its shape then eventually, melting. This is how magma created and it is the first step of volcanic activity.

Next, magma rises. Magma is mixture of liquid and gas. When liquid and gas are heated, their volume getting bigger and their weight became lighter. It is the key point of why magma rises. Because the ground is hot, also magma itself is hot, magma cannot bare this hot condition and finally moves to the surface of ground from the underground.

Finally, magma erupts. After magma goes out from the earth's crust, it is divided into liquid and gas. The liquid part is became "lava" and it flows through the ground. Before lava came out, some extraordinary phenomenons could be watched, for example, the earthquakes occurred, water temperature became higher, and neighboring lakes acidified. After magma erupted and lava flowed, then it becomes the real volcanic eruption.

Volcanic eruption can be explained simply with magma, but in real world, it is not that simple thing. It can destroy your friends, families, and all over the country. If you don't want to lose your people, start with a small step - have some knowledge of the volcanic eruption.

Ahn Sang-wook/process essay/tue 9 am.

We often hear about members of the national assembly in Korea through the news, radio or even your friends besides you. People sometimes encourage them to make the government administrations better, or criticize for their unacceptable misbehaviors as the members of assembly. Against this background, some citizens naturally want to be one of the members for making a better nation. Then what is the way to become the member in Korea?

Firstly, citizens who want to run for the national assembly have to know if they meet requirements for being the member. People have to be over 25 years old and not to be embroiled in any matters which caused them to be an incompetent or a lawbreaker. Next, they have to register to board of elections after they decide what kinds of electoral districts he/she wants to run for. There are two districts. One is a local constituency and the other is a national constituency. They choose one of them. Moreover, they decide to whether they stand as an independent or as a member of parties.

As you expected, secondly, they prepare an election campaign with election pledges they set to attract voters. However, the key is the possibility of translating pledges into concrete actions. And, the regulations of the election campaign are significantly complicated. Therefore, candidate should be careful whenever they go campaigning whether what they are doing is against the election law or not. For example, conduct a "red-card campaign" to prevent ineligible candidates from being elected in the elections. The things I mentioned above look difficult but an electioneering office will be always with you to help you out!

In the end, it's time to vote and open the ballot box and some candidates will be elected. In regard to voting, all nations except for several countries have four principles of voting: A secret ballot, a direct election, a popular election and an equal election. Through the four principles, elected person can absolutely represent citizens.

All of us can become a member of the national assembly. To be one of them is not something special where only few people, especially high-income or high-class people, can do. We can become one of them who serve for citizens by suggesting the laws for them or keeping the government in check. So, don't be afraid and just follow steps!

Finally you serve the meal to your lover with beautiful decorations. If you don’t want to adorn the dish, your cooking is already finished. But have you heard about the idiom that what looks   like great things tastes also good? So I recommend that you should prepare good-looking dishes and spoons. Then you call your spouse and serve it with a smile. If you do that, now, the process of cooking curried rice is perfectly concluded.

You already complete to prepare the curry to be a good spouse. You can realize that it isn’t a very difficult thing to cook curried rice. Because what you only have to do is to purchase ingredients, trim them, boil them and just serve it. So why don’t you try it? Don’t hesitate to make it for your spouse.

 Jarasum International Jazz Festival

 200801424 Park Hyunbae, EIT

People get tired, bored, and even exhausted in their daily lives. So they want to catch any opportunity to get amused, interested, and driven out of the box that makes their lives dull. One of the solutions to escape from mundane routine is to enjoy listening to music. You can enjoy music by attending a live concert or simply by plugging in a pair of earphones. Many Koreans who love to enjoy music often take the opportunity to attend a live music festival and out of those many music festivals I want to have some discussion about Jarasum International Jazz Festival.

Jarasum International Jazz Festival is one of many Korean music festivals. It began since 2004. It is held in Jarasum of Gapyeong, Gyunggi-Province. The name of Jarasum is derived from the shape of the island which resembles a Jara, a kind of turtle in Korean. The festival continues through three days, and on each day, there's a line-up of the day so you can chose what day you would go to the festival, or even it is possible to enjoy all three days. And it's just fine if you don't have enough money to buy a ticket; in that case, all you need is only the transportation costs because there're some stages to enjoy for free!

The concept of the festival is jazz, but there're some interesting parts in the festival itself; there's an annual concours to pick out some great, unknown artists! The concours began since 2007. It has produced many noticeable rookies. And also there're camp sites for those who want to enjoy though all three days there. But that's not all. The performances aren't held just only on the stages! Outside the stage sites, across the island, there're ittle concerts here and there; even it's for free just like a kind of street performances. People can feel the free air from the music around to the blue sky view. People all around have their own free, happy time with the music, and with their people together.

With the name of jazz, anyway, the festival gets the importance of holding the good performers. In fact, the planning team for the festival is busy itself in casting great jazz artist. The performers are very various with their styles. The festival's musical spectrum stretches over its style from standard jazz to fusion. In 2012, even John Scofield, one of the great jazz heroes, came to play! There come many jazz artists as soloists, orchestral bands, trio, quartets, and so on, with their only styles.

There are many famous music festivals around the world already. In the past, we didn't have any big cultural festival. But now with the help of the people who have concerns about the cultural foundation, there came many festivals in Korea and the Jarasum Festival became one of the world-wide famous jazz festivals. Now we can taste the jazz of quality at the live more easily than ever. I hope the existing festivals to be more widely known and one of festivals people want to go to enjoy, and also hope new original festivals to come out for the local people and the others. For that, I think it's the best step to have much interest in the cultural fields.

ChanLan Hong / How laws are made in your country / Tuesday / 9 a.m

I used to think that words like Legislation, Senate, Parliament, Federal, Law and etc are words that I doubt I will have to deal with for my entire life, since I am also not majoring in any fields related to that. No particular reasons but it just doesn't interest me at all until now. At the fundamental level, the purpose of Law is made to maintain a certain standard of behavior in a society. However, I never once questioned myself "How are Laws made? Who made the Law?" Thanks to my homework, I have this once in a lifetime opportunity to finally engage myself with proper legal understanding of how Laws are made in my country, Malaysia.

In Malaysia, the Parliament is divided into two houses which are known as The Lower House (Dewan Rakyat) and The Upper House (Dewan Negara). First, a Bill, which can be defined as a proposed law, will be introduced from either one of the houses. However, there is an exception when it comes to the "Money Bill". According to the Article 67 of the Federal Constitution, the "Money Bill" has to be proposed only from The Lower House. This "Money Bill" can only be introduced by a Minister.

The Bill will have to go through several stages of "Reading" in both the Houses of the Parliament. In "First Reading" stage, only the long title will be read. This is how a newly introduced Bill is conducted in the House. After that, the Bill will deal with the "Second Reading". This process also includes discussions and debates regarding the content of the Bill by all the member of the House. Once the second process is over, the Bill will be handed to the Committee Stage, where technical details of this Bill are being discussed. The formality continues to the House for the "Third Reading".

After all the process of reading is done, the Bill will be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, our Sultan, for his permission to weather or not this Bill will be made into an official law. Under the Article 66(4) of the Federal Constitution, the Sultan must assent to the Bill by causing the Public Seal to be affixed thereto. All these has to be done within a time period which is, 30 days from the date the Bill is being presented to him. A Bill assented by the Sultan will officially become the new Law. Also, no law will come into force unless it has been published under the Article 66(5) of the Federal Constitution.

This is how laws are made in Malaysia. To simplify it, basically a proposed law is introduced, goes through three stages of reading and will be presented to the Sultan for his agreement into making it official. As complicated as it sounds, I am very proud of myself for finally being able to understand how laws are enacted in my country. Now this piqued my curiosity how laws are made in Korea.

Sunmin Lee/2nd process essay/Tue9

Let's say you are a member of drama club, and your club is going do a play next month in front of the students. How would you prepare for the play? As we are not genius at acting like some famous actors, we do need a thorough preparation before the play. So, if you don't want to become a laughing stock in front of your school mates, you have to go through three main stages below.

First of all, read the whole scripts as much as possible, at least three times. Sometimes, people think the role they are going to play is the only thing they have to know about. However, you have to know not only about the role you are going to play, but also the whole story line, relationships between different characters, background information, and so on. You can learn all these by carefully reading the script. But reading only once would not be enough at all. So read again, and again, and again even till you almost memorize the whole script and can explain in detail about the story whenever you are asked.

After reading the script, the next step is to study and analysis your character. As an actor, you have to be fully responsible for your own role and make yourself impossible to be replaced by others. So you have to analysis your role and know well about it than anyone else. One way for this is by becoming that character even when you are not playing. When you are having lunch, brushing your teeth, taking bus to school or even before getting into sleep, think about the role. As you think about it again and again, you will be familiar with your role and realize many aspects of her.

Finally, it is time to apply what you've learned to the actual practice. It is pretty much different between "knowing" the character and "acting" the character, so that's why practicing is essential before you play in front of the audience. During the rehearsals, help each other with other actors and ask them what they think about your acting. Then, they would probably give you good feedbacks so you can reflect them to your playing. Also, don't forget to check if all the music and other stage effects work properly so there is no mistake on the actual stage.

After finishing all these three steps; reading the scripts, analyzing your character and the rehearsals, you will feel much more confident than before. Although it seems too much for you to do, they are the steps that will help you to become a better actor or actress and also make the play much better.

Song-pyeon

Jong Beom Cho

During the Korean thanks giving holiday, Chusuk, every region in Korea has its special dishes to celebrate the season's greeting. However, there is one food that every Korean share during the holiday and it is a rice cake called song-pyeon. Song-pyeon requires many people's hand in order to be made at home. Song-pyeon not only delights our tongue but it also brings everyone together making the holiday much more festive.

Song-pyeon is great with its taste but the making process is also a pleasurable experience. Song-pyeon is a tasty rice cake filled with various sweet stuffing it can be stuffed with honey, nuts, sesame seeds, and any other ingredients one wants to put into it. Depending on the stuffing one put into, song-pyeon can have many tastes. During Chusuk all sorts of song-pyeons are made because everyone has their own taste. Trying other families' song-pyeon is one of the fun experiences that Chusuk provides. In addition to the inside, the outer shell of song-pyeon which is very soft and somewhat spongy looks like a half moon can have many colors depending on the dying materials one use to make the dough. Song-pyeon can be white, green, pink, orange, and so many other colors, which makes the song-pyeon making so delightful.

Song-pyeon making is fun but it is also a laborious task. Therefore, it requires family gathering. In these days, everyone in the family is so busy that it is hard for everyone to meet and have a quality time together. But once in a year during Chusuk, everyone get together and make song-pyeon together, talking about what is going on in our lives and many other stories to catch up on. Song-pyeon is loved by Koreans because it has not only good taste but it bonds family members together. Its emotional value is priceless.

I have my own memories of song-pyeon, too. Last year my family made song-pyeon together. We did not made song-pyeon together at home since my grandmother passed away. It was my grandmother who used to supervise and lead the whole process. Also with her touch every food tasted so much better. I do not know what hit me but I suddenly wanted to make the song-pyeon at home again. Since I led the song-pyeon making this time, everything was so unprepared. It did not taste as good as my grandmother's song-pyeon but it brought back a lot of good memories. I was very happy that I could remember my grandmother in such a meaningful way. Like my own, song-pyeon bring back a lot of good memories for many Koreans.

Song-pyeon making is interesting and offers a great treat for our hungry stomach. It also brings family together and allows us to have a great time with our families. Korean lifestyle is changing from family bond to individualism. Nowadays everyone is so busy that they are unconcerned about people around them. But song-pyeon brings love toward families and friend as well as good memories back to us. It is why song-pyeon is my favorite holiday food.

Simmy/Spring Festival/ Tue 9am

Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are all crowded with home returnees. Why are they so eagerto gohome? Well, they all go for to celebrate the Spring Festival with their families together. Spring Festival is the biggest festival in China, it's a day for the family members to reunite, it takes place on the first day of the lunar calendar. People often prepare the festival weeks before.

To get ready for it, people are busy doing their Spring Festival shopping. They buy spring couplets to paste them on the gateposts for good fortune. And various food is also prepared. For instance, they buy "jiaozi", dumplings for the Spring Festival Eve dinner. The shape of the dumplings is like "yuanbao", which is the ancient money, so eating dumplings symbolizes the wealth of life. Hot pots and fish are also included in the Spring Festival Eve dinner. What's more, new clothes are also necessary to welcome the new year.

On Spring Festival Eve, families reunite and have dinner together. For those who rarely go home, the eve is a precious time for them to chat with parents and relatives. They toast with each other to give best wishes. Children are delighted to receive the "red envelope", which contains money, from the elders. Then, at 8 o'clock, families sit on the sofa to watch the program of Spring Festival Gala Evening together. They often burst out laughter because of the brilliant performance. On 12 o'clock, beautiful fireworks are burned to welcome the new day of the year.

The next day after the Spring Festival Eve, people often visit relatives and friends, it is called" pay a new year call."  They chat about the past year, and give each other best wishes for the next year. Despite that, people also offer sacrifices to gods or ancestors, hoping peace and wealth for the coming new year. The sacrificial offerings are often seen as pigs, chickens, ducks and fishes. As there is one week Spring Festival holiday, nowadays go traveling also becomes a good choice for people.

Although during the Spring Festival people are busy doing shopping, preparing the eve dinner and visiting relatives, it often ends with the precious memory leaving to everyone. Actually it's a moving moment for families to reunite, pour out stories that happen during the whole year, and give best wishes to the beloved ones.

Park Gyu Oh/Chu-Seok (Korean thanks-giving day)/9:00 am

201101245 Park Gyu Oh

Korean people get fat in September. Of course, the reason why they get heavier is they eat a lot. Then what makes them eat a lot? It is a Chu-seok, Korean thanks giving day. It takes place on 15th of August on lunar calendar. A long time ago, the King Yu-Ri of Sin-ra dynasty told princesses to make women in their city weave hemp clothes. It started from the someday on July when the full moon appeared, and it ended on August 15th. Winner sides were chosen by their score, and the other sides served the foods for them. This is the origin of chuseok. However these days, it is a celebration of good harvest. On chuseok, we eat a lot of Korean traditional foods, do some traditional activities, and have a memorial service for ancestors.

Song-pyun, Jeon, beef-rib stew and Jap chae. These things are the korean traditional foods we usually eat on Chu-seok. Song-pyun is a kind of rice cake, but its shape resemble the half moon. People usually put some sugars and other bean jam fillings in it. Jeon is like a pancake, but it is not sweet. Kim-chi, pumpkins, pepper, sea foods, and etc. We put various kind of food on it. If we put Kim-chi on it, the name of that Jeon is Kim-chi Jeon. Jap chae is consist of mixed dish of boiled bean threads, stir-fried vegetables, and shredded meat. All these are very delicious and good for our health, so that is why people get fat after Chu-seok.

People do some traditional activities for fun and to express their grateful feelings. Ganggangsullae is one of the famous activity related to Chu-seok. It is like a group dance. People make a circle and grab each other's hands. Then they sing a song and turn around to anti-clockwise direction. People usually dress Korean traditional costume 'han-bok' while doing this. In the past, women are not allowed to going out in the night. Therefore Ganggangsullae was the rare opportunity to play with friends and the way of expressing their feelings. There are other famous activities like Ssireum(Korean wrestling), a game of yut and etc.

The most important part is Cha-r'ye. It is ancestral rite. People do this to remember their ancestors and to pay respect to them. First, they set the table for the ancestral rite. And then people carefully arrange the food on the table by traditional orders. When the all relatives gathered, they bowed twice to our ancestors. Most of the Christians skip this because it is against their religion. After the rite, they eat the food together.

These days, modern people usually do not farming and the tradition became modernized. People enjoy this holiday as their own way. We do not dance and if you are Christian, skip the rite.  Some people just go to travel on this holiday. However, still, it is a precious day that makes whole big family meet each other and communicate with each other. People can modernized but they cannot forget their family.

Minah Lee/Holiday/Tue9am

When my favorite holiday, Seol-Nal comes around, I would get excited to do typical holiday things. I remember that the joy of New Year 's Day when I was little was much more than the years after growing up. Still I meet my cousins and relatives on Seol-Nal, enjoy eating foods and have fun, but I miss the good old days when I did all these things.

Once the holiday came, everybody came to my grandma's house a day before the holiday and began preparing for holiday foods. My cousins and I were still young, so we just enjoy tasting the foods and those who did mostly errands. After talking and watching TV, we went out to bounce up and down on a big trampoline. With a little money, we enjoyed just enough time on the trampoline and headed to a nearby elementary school, jumping on the road as if we were still on it. School playground was a perfect stage for us to do some interesting games. We usually went back home around the time when setting sun was glowing.

After we had dinner, we were ready for playing 'catching ghosts' in the dark. The one who lost the toss became the catcher with the blanket on and had to catch ghosts in the dark. The blanket had covered the sight of the catcher, so the rest let the catcher know by touching him or clapping hands. Next, when the night got darker, we all went up to rooftop and listened to creepy ghost stories. Later, we all came down and slept together in a small room, watching movies on the TV.

Since I've grown up, I lost this pleasure and my cousins and I sometimes talk about the memories we shared on every holidays. I wonder when I could find these holiday memories again, but I am still looking forward to having them.
