The Importance of Working Less

 

If asked to think about modern technology, one may easily think of glitzy cars on highways and ubiquitous cell phones as well as cutting-edge factory automatic system. As technology develops, modern people now can live more efficient life than ever. However, it has been a controversial topic whether reducing working hours would be beneficial or not. I believe that working less and having more leisure time bring more benefits than devoting their life to workplace.

     To start with, as far as individual is concerned, working less and having leisure time may contribute to dealing with continuous psychological oppression that many modern people suffer from. Because of the development of technology, people realized that they may produce more in the same time. Accordingly, it led the society to be exposed to severe competitions and this caused people to struggle with mental oppression which causes huge amount of stress. Thus, having quality time with family members and for oneself is crucial to remedy this distress. This will eventually enable people to be more productive and lead better life in the long run.

     Besides, working less and having more leisure time would provide a suggestion when it comes down to sustainable development for a society. As people have more time off, more jobs are created which refers that a number of people may be benefited by taking place of the spaces. This means that working less may give opportunities for those who are in great need of it and thus, create a fairer society. In addition, if people reduce their working hours, they'd be consuming less. This can incredibly be helpful for coping with environmental problems as people buy less and throw away less.

     Some people argue that having people work longer could be more productive as regular workers are accustomed to their tasks which can be more efficient. This seems to be reasonable however, this does not guarantee the efficiency and productivity of personnel since working more hours could be such an onerous task for even an experienced worker. Considering individual and social aspect of working less and having more leisure time, I believe this will bring more advantages than disadvantages and also, it is social imperative that we need to work on to take it into action.
