Kayeong Kim / Holiday / Tue 9 a.m.

What did you do in 1st day of March, 2013? Did you make a plan for a new month? Were you worried about new semester? Or did you go somewhere with your family? For me, I was in Rome, thinking about my future career plan. I was screening the Facebook wall, one post attract my attention suddenly. Yes, It was the day we should never forget. Samiljeol, The Independence Movement of Korea. Right after, I wrote this comment on that post. - I might not be in here and even more, I couldn't be a Korean without this day. 'Thank' or 'Appreciate' are not enough word to express my feeling. – Then I had a short silent prayer to all brave ancestors who protected my nation.

It goes up for 1939, during the Second World war when Japan dominated Korea illegally. Japanese forced Korean to being like Japanese – Japanese Language, Japanese Name and Japanese culture. Korean people desired returning Korea before it was dominated. Since Japan didn't admit the colonial control, so intellectuals decided to promulgate the intention of the independence. They organized several independence movement, and Samiljeol is one of the largest and crucial movement at then. Starting from the attacking towards a Japanese police substation, the long day had begun. All the citizens cried out the 'Independence' and there were 33 independent activists who proclaimed the independence of Korea.

On this day, we raise a national flag in every houses and buildings. Ceremonies are held in government offices including reenacting the movement by students and citizens. However, for some Koreans, it's no more than a holiday. Like other holidays, they regard as time for travel or take a rest. Without this movement, Korea won't be here today. It means we need to honor their ideals of saving the country at least once in a year. And that's why the day is designated as a national holiday. Until now many people think those National Holiday is boring. Fortunately, some people come up with some effective and creative way to celebrate that day. Ceremony is not a obvious thing anymore. They perform with traditional and modern instruments in big square. The important thing is not to forget their endeavor forever.
