How does the human respiratory system work?    Respiration is the process that introduces respiratory gases to the interior and performs gas exchange.  As human breaths, air comes in noses and go through bronchial tubes and finally get to the lung. Then molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide are passively exchanged by diffusion between the gaseous external environment and the blood. When we introduce air, the ribs goes up and diaphram goes down so that there's room for air. When we exhale, the procedure is reversed so that the air can go out.  In conclusion, respiration is the process of air inhale and exhale by lung's contraction and relaxation.
