Yujin Park/Holiday/Tue 9am.

In Korea, Holidays are only few days a year all family members gather and meet together. So, in holidays, Most Koreans try to spend what little time they have with family. For this reason, they have so many holiday activities and rites to do family members all together.

There are two biggest national holidays in Korea, Lunar New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day. Especially, I'd like to tell you WHAT MY FAMILY DO for the biggest holiday in Korea, lunar new year's day, which is called 'Seollal'.

First, in the morning of 'Seollal', my family get dressed up in our Hanbok, the Korean traditional costume. The Hanbok displays Korean's traditional style and grace. It is very popular with its vibrant colors and simple lines without pockets.

It looks complicated to put on but it's just tying the front ribbon that's a little tricky. In my opinion, dressing up in Hanbok, it makes all family members to strengthen families. Therefore, I think it is one of the most important process for 'Seollal'.

Then, The traditional korean food especially for 'Seollal' greets all families gathered for holiday. The most popular one is Tteokguk. The dish consists of the soup with thinly sliced rice cakes (tteok - it can be called a kind of rice pasta). It is tradition to eat Tteokguk on New Year's Day because it is believed to grant the consumer luck for the forthcoming year and gain an additional year of life.

Usually, we eat it after ancestor worship ceremonies(ancestral rites) but it depends on family's tradition.

After eating Tteokguk, visiting a family member's grave is one of the most important process for holiday. This rite is to pay family's respects for deads.

and All family members are gathered and play the most popular traditional game, Yut nori in Korean. It is the demotic game that has been handed down for generations. This game is played with a rectangular board and five Yut sticks by casting them on the board.

As the game is played by a group, my family make two groups and we are on a bet for coffees.

As this game can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age or gender, playing a Yut is the memorable occasion for family to have a rattling time together.

This is not just my family's story. Most Koreans enjoy and have memorable time with their family in Seollal. For Koreans, holiday is the best occaion to take a break from their routine and have a great time with their relatives.

That's why most Koreans spend their few holidays visiting their families although it takes 8 or 10 hours to arrive their home since highways are jammed with cars.

  2. From Kayeong Kim to Yujin Park

    1. I like your story how your family spent a New Year's day. Since more and more family doesn't do it anymore these days. Even for foreigners who don't know Korean tradition on New Year's day, would understand what we are doing through your essay.

    2. Your main point seems to be emphasize the New Year's day is the most largest holiday in Korea, therefore most Koreans enjoy that day with family.

    3. You used original Korean like 'Theokguk' or 'Yut, it seems hard to understand at first, but i think it's good to let audience know the exact words.

    4. However, you divided paragraphs so much. It isn't clear to see the main stream of the essay. How about organize it much formal?

    5. Could you add the objective or purpose of that day? Or how about put some personal stories into it? I am sure it appeals more audiences like your eassay!

  3. 2nd draft of essay

Especially, I'd like to tell you my family do for the biggest holiday in Korea, lunar new year's day, which is called 'Seollal'.

First, in the morning of 'Seollal', my family get dressed up in our Hanbok, the Korean traditional costume. My grandparents decided to wear it in all holidays because they thought it makes all family members strengthen families. So For Koreans, It's joyful to wear it for holidays since the Hanbok displays Korean's traditional style and grace and also It is very popular with its vibrant colors and simple lines without pockets.
Sometimes, my little cousins complain because It is complicated to put on but whenever they say that, my grandmother says it's just tying the front ribbon that's a little tricky.
Therefore, dressing up in Hanbok is one of the important process to enjoy Seollal.
We, my family, are looking forward wearing it when holiday comes.

Then, The traditional korean food especially for 'Seollal' greets all families gathered for holiday. The most popular one is Tteokguk. The dish consists of the soup with thinly sliced rice cakes (tteok - it can be called a kind of rice pasta).
