Halloween

Do you believe in ghosts? Do they make you scared? I still remember the somber night when I watched a horror movie called 'Sixth sense'. I was so scared if the ghosts in the movie would appear in front of me and ended up staying up all night. I was willing to make effort to stay away from them that night. Likewise, people from long time ago believed in ghosts. They were scared of the ghosts and began celebrating 'Halloween' to daunt the ghosts and to throw them out. People would gather together with wearing costumes and try to relieve the fear. Nowadays, Halloween is considered one of the biggest festivals in western countries and people look forward to it as October begins.

As soon as October starts, all the markets and costume shops are overflowed with Halloween costumes. Since costumes play a significant role on Halloween you may see a number of costumes from traditional ones such as witches, vampires, and Casper to modern ones such as fairies, ninjas, and even Harry Potter. Not only kids but adults may seem to be truly excited to choose costumes. On Halloween, there are usually costume parades in big cities such as Greenwich Village in New York. Soon, thousands of people gather together and boast their various costumes under the high-spirited atmosphere and the street then is filled with numerous colors and loud laugh.

Decoration of a house cannot be neglected. After preparing for the costumes, people begin decorating the house with candles, lights, and carved pumpkins. The carved pumpkins, especially, is also called Jack-o-lantern and it represents the Halloween. A number of people buy pumpkins to make the jack-o-lantern and they begin with hollowing out the pumpkin with paddles. After this, they start carving the pumpkin with raised eyes, a stumpy nose and a mouth with wicked grin so that they look like a human.  Finally, when the carving is done, they put a candle inside the pumpkin to make it stand out.

Lastly, on Halloween Day, there's an old tradition called 'Trick or Treat'. Kids knock their neighbor's door and say 'Trick or Treat'. Then, the neighbor should give them candies or chocolates otherwise, some mischievous kids might throw rocks, eggs and even paint on the house. This tradition would be the most exciting moment for the kids because they can have confections as much as they have.

Halloween is one of the biggest celebrations in western countries. Although it's been changed as time goes it is still meaningful for westerners by the fact that people gather altogether and have a moment to share the joy with neighbors. If you have a chance to visit western countries, how about joining Halloween Day to feel this dynamic and vibrant moment?
