Park Ye Jee /Holiday/ Tue 9.a.m

In Korea, there are 3 major national holidays: "Seul-nal" which is lunar new year's day, "Dan-o" which is the fifth day of the fifth month of the year according to the lunar calendar, and "Choo-suk" which is August 15th of the lunar calendar.

Among these, my favorite holiday is Seul-nal. The reason why I prefer it the most is that I feel myself refreshed I think I can start something new because it is a new day of a new year.

I think many people will like Seul-nal for this reason. Actually Seul-nal is considered the biggest holiday in Korea.

As the first day of a new year passing previous year, several ceremonies are done to wish the best year.

I am going to tell what my family does in this holiday.

At the first day, Grandmother and other relatives visit our home because my father is the oldest son among his brothers and sisters. And in the night, we have memorial rites for our ancestors.

To do this, women in our home have to make a lot of foods including fruits, fish. During the rites, we bow twice in front of pictures of ancestors.

And then, we share the food we made for the rites. It means that we get bless by eating the food our ancestor tasted.

And in the early morning of the next day, about 7a.m, we ride and visit the place where the graves of ancestor are. Women prepare some food in front of gravestones and all the people bow twice. It is called "Seong-Myo" in Korean.

After Seong-Myo, we return home and have a breakfast. We eat "Tteokguk" which is a kind of rice-cake soup. Eating this food is for longevity. Including tteokguk, we also eat many dessert like
"sikhye", sweet rice drink or "sujeonggwa", persimmon punch.

After breakfast, all sit around in a living room. Child and teenager or young adults make bows one time in front of old adults to respect them. And then, adults advise and wish giving some money or small gifts.

This is the end of what my family does. Whenever the first day of a new year comes, I can't wait to see my relatives. Because when they come home, the atmosphere is very lively and delightful.

Besides, I am proud that we Korean have this kind of holiday.

    1. Does the essay have a thesis statement that identifies the process? Yes. 'several ceremonies are done to wish the best year.' states to indicate there will be some ceremonies introduced.

    2. Does the writer include background information? The writer said it's lunar new year's but other than that I don't see any further background information.

    3. Does each paragraph present a different part of the process? One or two paragraph show(s) the process. I see some paragraph has process but because there is no conjunction it doesn't look like it's a process.

    4. Are the parts of the process organized in a logical sequence? In second paragraph, the writer used 'And then' to show the chronological order. But since the paragraph was so short that couldn't tell if it's logically organized.

    5. Do the body paragraphs have any facts, definitions, or details? It'd be better if you put more background information of what Seol-nal is (although it should be under 'introduction' part)and details of what 'Tteokguk' or 'Seong-myo' is.

    6. Does the writer include an evaluation, recommendation, or warning in the conclusion? I guess the writer included an insight of the holiday-how much she enjoys it.

  2. 1. Yes, it has.
    2. It could be better if you explained Lunar Calendar.
    3. Yes. I think the paragraphs were devided properly.
    4. It is hard to define whether it is logical order or not, anyway there's no problem to read and understand the essay.
    5. Maybe more details will make the essay better.
    6. Evaluation.

I really enjoyed reading your essay!
